A bill was recently passed in the Florida legislature that makes it a requirement for individuals riding horses on public roads or trails to be wearing a helmet at all times if they are under the age of 16. 

The bill is being referred to as "Nicole's Law", after a 12 year old girl who was killed while riding a horse.  The girl was thrown from the horse and hit her head on the pavement,  leading to her death. 

The bill passed through the legislator without almost total approval. Lawmakers hopes that it can help prevent avoidable death of young children under 16 who are riding horses.

With the recent number of boating accidents being heavily featured in the news, many people are beginning to follow more serious and strict boater safety.

A pilot was attempting to land at Albert Whitted Airport near St. Petersburg when his plane crashed into a bay.

The pilot was coming back from an air show,  when he was attempting to land on the airport runway.  According to the current reports, the pilot was coming into fast.  The pilot kept pumping his brakes in an attempt to slow the plane down, but it ran out of runway. The plane then skipped into the bay and crashed.

Although the plane was almost completely destroyed, the pilot was safe.  The pilot was picked up by a boater who saw the accident, and the boater dropped the pilot off on the shore to an awaiting ambulance.  The pilot had no injuries from the incident, and walked himself to the awaiting emergency officials.

A 31 year-old Florida man will be charged in the death of a 23 year-old woman following an accident on the highway in late March.

The man who caused the accident hit a van carrying 4 women.  One was killed, and the other passengers were seriously injured in the accident. 

The man who caused the accident was driving on the wrong side of the road, and struck the women head-on. The man was found to have alcohol in his system, with a blood alcohol content level twice the legal limit.

Investigators have found alcohol on the boat that lost control and rammed into a tug boat earlier this week.  The accident killed 5 individuals, and left at least 9 others injured.

Alcohol has been verified as being on the boat, but it was not yet determined how much of a factor that it played in the accident. 

The National Transportation Safety Board will continue their investigation into this accident, along with other state officials.

A Florida Highway Patrol officer was recently in the hospital recovering from a broken pelvis after an accident.  Responding to a possible domestic dispute,  the patrol woman was responding to the incident which was on the side of a highway.  After parking the car, and walking up next to the other vehicle,  the accident occurred.  Another driver,  a 78 year-old woman,  lost control of her vehicle.  When losing control of her vehicle, she slammed into the car parked on the side of the road,  injuring the trooper.

The woman who caused the accident is currently listed in critical condition.
