A 48 year-old man from Zephyrhills man is in the hospital following a Tampa car accident.

According to a officials with the Tampa Police Department, Ernest Alexander was traveling south on Interstate 275 when the crash occurred. Alexander lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway, and collided with the back of a sanitation truck which was parked on the shoulder of the road, police say.

The driver of the sanitation truck, 26 year-old Gregory Charlemagne, had pulled over to the shoulder after one of the truck's tires blew out. The force of the impact caused a storage compartment door on the truck to break off. The door struck another car, authorities say, but no other injuries were reported.

Alexander was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital after the crash. He is listed in critical condition. No information on the nature of his injuries is available.
