Lakeland Police Officer Killed in Traffic Accident

A Lakeland police officer is dead following a three-vehicle accident that occurred in Polk County on Monday afternoon.

A 54-year-old woman was driving her 1989 Ford station wagon eastbound on State Road 25 when she pulled in front of a man driving southbound in a Pontiac sedan.  The driver of the Pontiac veered to avoid hitting the woman, cutting into northbound traffic and crashing into the front of a 2008 Ford Explorer driven by the off-duty police officer.  The officer was ejected from his vehicle, and died at the scene.  No one else was injured.
